Born near Hinton, Alberta, Canada, Wolf 42 along with her mother Wolf 39 and two sisters were among the original thirty-one wolves reintroduced to Yellowstone Park from Canada in 1995-96.

Ostracized from the Druid Peak pack by her aggressive sister wolf 40, Wolf 42 later rejoined the pack and gained control in what was to be a long rein of leadership. She was hence dubbed the “Cinderella Wolf” on National Geographic’s Wolves—A Legend Returns to Yellowstone.

As alpha female of the Druid Peak Pack she helped establish what was to become
one of the largest packs ever recorded anywhere in history—an unprecedented 37 wolves. Forty-two was killed by other wolves on Specimen Ridge in late January, 2004; she was the last original Canadian wolf alive in Yellowstone Park. Her descendants survive throughout the Yellowstone Ecosystem to this day and are viewed by Park visitors from around the world.

Wolf 42 and her mate 21 presided over the Druid pack until they both reached the age of 9 years (the average age for a wild wolf in Yellowstone at that time was 3.5 years - less than 3% of wolves in a population managed to achieve the longevity that these two did). The pair was inseparable and was known to "parallel walk," a sign of pair bonding where the two wolves walk along with their sides pressed together, a wolf hug of sorts, more than any other pair of wolves we had watched.

This piece was inspired by the artist having watched her survey the scene immediately prior to leading her last litter of pups across the road and river in Lamar Valley during the summer of 2003.
